I agree with your sentiments, this is exactly why I keep back-ups of my music library. Yep, you read that right. Multiple back-ups.

@OP

I close my eyes, only for a moment
And the moment's gone
All my dreams pass before my eyes, a curiosity
Dust in the wind
All they are is dust in the wind
Same old song, just a drop of water
In an endless sea
All we do crumbles to the ground
Though we refuse to see
Dust in the wind
All we are is dust in the wind
Oh, ho, ho
Now, don't hang on, nothing lasts forever but the earth and sky..

13 years. Must have been multiple Machines over those years so hummmm any chance much of a file is on an older machine you still have working?

Kill yourself.

@524,448 (Syntax)
One of the two possible backups was also tossed. The other one is a drive that died and is likely unrecoverable at this point.

Fuck off, go be a dick in your own thread.

Almost all computer repair shops have a box that will fast check and see if a hard drive can be fixed. Beyond that you can find services that will open up the drive and remove the disks and see what can be recovered. This is a huge business re mass of head crashes. That recovery is very very expensive. However hard drives also fail because of fail of electronics inside the drive. Fixing that is still about $200

This week I had a fail of a Samsung display. Its a mechanical fail of one lead contact point on the circuit board. Works when cold and as guts heat up the display goes blank - Hit it with my hand and can get it to work momentary -

Temp cycle of solder points leads to lead broken and often super hard to locate and very time consuming.

Head crash is usually only on a portion of one of many disks inside the drive and only wipes out a small amount of data and is usually visible to the eye because heads normally float and never touch the surface and when they do its just that one disk and all comes to a halt quickly.

All of my music is on Flash with back up on the portable device. Now I have yet to exceed the 32 Gigs but do not have anything like 10 years stored.

Thing is, I already sent this drive for recovery many years ago because of user failure. They recovered the data without opening it, formatted the drive as NTFS and then put the data back on the drive. I copied the data to a newer drive of the same size and then stupidly attempted to re-format it to FAT because I thought maybe it wasn't ruined and I wanted something that would be read/write capable on any OS. It's been a long time so I don't remember exactly what happened, but after I tried to re-format it I concluded that it was dead so I put it in a box and that's where it's been for 10 years. I don't exactly have the luxury of spending a bunch of money to try recovering a drive I'm pretty certain I killed.

Do you remember if you formatted the disk for the conversion first?

I'm not quite sure what you mean, but if you mean did I select full format or quick format, I would've done quick.

Its just been to many years since I last converted one to the other. What I do remember is the need to first make a couple of decisions and one was very important - I did that because something I had was old and wood not recognize NTFS - I am sure I wood have formatted a partition in order to do that first but that is all I remember.

I wood bet the data is still there and it is worth connecting it up as an external drive and taking a look at. Nothing to lose - See what error message you get if it fails to load.
